Episode 21: Dr. Mary Gardner, part one

Dr. Mary Gardner is the co-founder of Lap of Love along with Dr. Dani McVety. We were excited to have Mary as a podcast guest for two episodes and she did not disappoint us! In part one, we talk about our careers before vet med. Which of us wanted to be an Egyptologist? Can you guess who had a career in mortgage insurance? Who was a crack software developer? Mary talks about the origins of Lap of Love, now offering compassionate in-home euthanasias and hospice care with 130 vets in 60 locations. They have helped over 50,000 families say goodbye to a beloved pet and currently handle over 600 calls each day. It’s even more incredible since Mary originally wanted to be a marine scientist!

Episode 14: Kara Burns – Veterinary technicians rock!

Kara Burns

We were thrilled to have the opportunity while at NY Vet to sit down with Kara Burns, MS, MEd, LVT, VTS (Nutrition), VTS-H (Internal Medicine, Dentistry). Kara is not only the president of the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America, she is well known as a supporter of veterinary technician specialty training (Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Clinical Practice) and of veterinary nutrition. Kara talks with us about the powerful role of veterinary technicians/nurses in practice today and the wealth of free online tools for nutrition through the World Small Animal Veterinary Association and the Pet Nutrition Alliance. We also chat about how to get cats to eat while in the hospital, and why feeding puzzles are a good idea. Our one disappointment is that we couldn’t get her to say the “D word.”
